we have tried: Drinking beer only, limiting the number of drinks, never drinking alone, never drinking in the morning, drinking only at home, never having it in the house, never drinking during business hours, drinking only at parties, switching from scotch to brandy, drinking only natural wines, agreeing to resign if ever drunk on the job, taking a trip, not taking a trip, swearing off forever (with
and without a solemn oath), taking more physical exercise, reading inspirational books, going to health farms and sanitariums, accepting voluntary commitment to asylums --

God has not delivered us the
good things of life which we specified, as a

These were some of the ways in which fear conspired with pride to hinder our making a list of all the people we had harmed.

As we look over the list of business acquaintances and friends we have hurt, we may feel diffident about going to some of them on a spiritual basis.

To avoid falling into confusion over the names these defects should be
called, let's take a universally recognized list of major human failings -- the Seven Deadly Sins of pride, greed, lust, anger, gluttony, envy, and sloth.

After we have made the list of people we have harmed, have reflected carefully upon each instance, and have tried to possess ourselves of the right attitude in which to proceed, we will see that the making of direct amends divides those we should approach into several classes.

Then, as year by year we walk back through our lives as far as memory will reach, we shall be bound to construct a long list of people who have, to some extent or other, been affected.

But even these people, if they
construct a list of still milder defects, will be obliged to admit that they prefer to hang on to some of
them.

Nearly anyone could submit a good list of such defects as these, and few of us
would seriously think of
giving them up, at least until they cause us excessive misery.

Now let's ponder the need for a list of the more glaring personality defects all of us have in varying degrees.

training, such a list would set forth serious violations of moral principles.
