If, when you honestly want
to, you find you cannot quit entirely, or if when drinking, you have little control over the amount you take, you are probably alcoholic.

By now the newcomer has probably arrived at the following conclusions:
that his character defects, representing instincts gone astray, have been the primary
cause of his drinking and
his failure at life; that unless he is now willing to work hard at the elimination of
the worst of these defects,
both sobriety and peace of mind will still elude him; that all the faulty
foundation of his life will have to be torn out and built anew on bedrock.

If he feels free to discuss his problems with
you, if he knows you understand and will not be upset by anything he wishes to say, he will probably be off to a fast start.

I think I must have been thoroughly scared by what
had happened, or by the doctor, or probably both, so that I did not touch a drink again until the country went dry.

He had lived there but a few weeks when he found that the place probably contained more alcoholics per square mile than any city in the country.

Then, for good measure, we add dramatic descriptions of that part
of our drinking behavior
which our friends probably know about anyhow.

Admit that he probably knows more about it than you do,
but call to his attention
the fact that however deep his
faith and knowledge, he
could not have applied it or he would not drink.

They comfort the melancholy one by first showing him that his case is not strange or different, that his character defects are probably not more numerous or worse than those of anyone else in A.A.

When this sort of thinking
is fully established in
an individual with alcoholic tendencies, he
has probably placed himself beyond human aid, and unless locked up, may die or go
permanently insane.

The sponsor probably points out that the newcomer has some assets
which can be noted along with
his liabilities.

To some people we need not,
and probably should not emphasize the spiritual
feature on our first approach.

It is probably true that you and
your husband have been living too much alone, for drinking many times isolates the wife of an alcoholic.

If your husband is a drinker, you probably worry over what other people are thinking and you hate to meet your friends.
