labors were not Twelfth Step jobs at all, the critics attacked as A.A. professionals these workers of ours who were often doing thankless tasks that no one else
could or would do.

Until we had talked with complete candor of our conflicts, and had listened to someone else do the same thing, we still didn't belong.

But again we are driven on by
the inescapable conclusion which we draw from
A.A. experience, that we surely must try with a will, or else fall by the wayside.

This will be a very different occasion, and in
sharp contrast with those hangover mornings when we alternated between reviling ourselves and blaming the family (and everyone else) for our troubles.

It may turn out, however, that
you'll choose someone else for the more difficult and deeper revelations.

They often jeopardize
their own positions by trying to help serious drinkers who should
have been fired long ago, or else given an opportunity to get well.

When we became alcoholics, crushed by a
self-imposed crisis we could not postpone
or evade, we had to fearlessly face the proposition that either God is everything or else He is nothing.

They comfort the melancholy one by first showing him that his case is not strange or different, that his character defects are probably not more numerous or worse than those of anyone else in A.A.

Let us reemphasize that
this reluctance to fight
one another or anybody else is not counted as some special virtue which makes us feel superior to other people.

We alcoholics see that we
must work together and hang together, else most of us will finally die alone.

Though he is now a most effective member of Alcoholics Anonymous, he
still smokes and drinks coffee, but neither his wife nor anyone else stands in judgment.

We wives found that, like everybody else, we were afflicted with pride, self-pity, vanity and all the things which go to make up the self-centered person; and we were not above selfishness or dishonesty.

If I keep on turning my life and my will over to the care of Something or Somebody
else, what will become of me?

Else why would we consume such great amounts of time wishing for what we have
not, rather than working
for it, or angrily looking
for attributes we shall
never have, instead of adjusting to the fact, and accepting it?

Sometimes this was a tedious process; we hope no one
else will be prejudiced for as long as
some of us were.

upon His perfect justice, forgiveness, and
love was healthy, and that it
would work where nothing
else would.
