His alcoholic problem
was so complex, and his depression so great, that we
felt his only hope would be through what we then called
"moral psychology," and
we doubted if even that would
have any effect.

A man may criticize or laugh at himself and it will affect others favorably, but criticism or ridicule coming from another often produces the contrary effect.

But it was by no means sure that such great numbers of yet erratic people could live and work together with harmony and good effect.

When an A.A. talks for money, whether at a meeting or to a single newcomer, it can have a very bad effect on him, too.

At the start, this was all we needed to commence spiritual growth, to effect our first conscious relation with God as we understood Him.

This was only a beginning, though if honestly and humbly made, an effect, sometimes a very great one, was felt at once.

They piled on me heaps of evidence to the effect that an
alcoholic mentality,
such as I had exhibited in
Washington, was a hopeless condition.

Henry Ford once made a wise remark to the effect that experience is the thing of supreme value in life.

And with such good effect that the doctor agreed to a test among his patients and certain other alcoholics from a clinic
which he attends.

Though our decision was a
vital and crucial step, it could have little permanent effect unless at once followed by a strenuous effort to face, and to be rid of, the things in ourselves which had been blocking us.

These were revolutionary and drastic proposals, but the
moment I fully accepted them, the effect was
electric.
